Abstract: Assessing hands-on skills in technical programs is crucial for ensuring that students acquire the practical competencies required in their respective fields. This study investigates the challenges associated with assessing hands-on skills and proposes strategies to enhance the assessment process. The objectives are: (1) to identify the main challenges in assessing hands-on skills in technical education, (2) to evaluate the effectiveness of current assessment methods, and (3) to develop recommendations for improving hands-on skill assessment. A survey research design is employed, justified by the need to gather insights from students, educators, and industry professionals about their experiences and perspectives on hands-on skill assessment. The sample size includes 300 participants selected through purposive sampling to ensure representation from various technical programs. The case study focuses on technical institutions in Kaduna State, known for their emphasis on practical training. Findings revealed that challenges such as subjective assessment criteria, limited access to equipment, and time constraints significantly impacted the assessment of hands-on skills. Despite these challenges, practical exams, project-based assessments, and industry internships were found to be effective in evaluating hands-on skills. Recommendations included standardizing assessment criteria, increasing investment in training equipment, and incorporating more industry-based assessments to ensure the reliability and validity of hands-on skill assessments.
